2006 Toyota Camry:

The Toyota Camry has remained very popular with American consumers, it has in fact been No. 1 for eight of the past nine years. In spring of 2006 Toyota will once again ensure that its best-selling American vehicle remains on top by not only restyling it but adding a new hybrid edition. The hybrid keeps Toyota's lead in the field by applying gas-saving technology to the family sedan. Both models were introduced Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the North American International Auto Show, which opens to the public on Saturday. While a new Camry is always news, the hybrid is the big headline. Underneath the reshaped front end resides Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. The electric motor boosts the 147-horsepower, 2.4-liter engine to 192 horsepower. Toyota estimates a preliminary fuel economy rating of 43 miles per gallon in city driving, 37 mpg highway. This means it can travel 650 miles on a tank of gas — enough to travel from New York City to Detroit. The hybrid system works by running on electric power only at low speeds. At moderate speeds, the electric motor and gas engine run together. At highway speeds, the gas engine runs alone. The electric motor's batteries are recharged during braking so that it never has to be plugged in. In addition, when coming to a complete stop, the gas engine is shut off. It restarts once the driver accelerates. Elsewhere, the car has undergone many small but significant changes, especially in styling.

In 2007, Toyota has sought to change this image by endowing the Camry with an upscale, athletic appearance. It's especially noticeable in the rear, where the trunk lid mimics the appearance of the BMW 7-Series. The interior is surprisingly roomy, especially in the rear seat. Credit goes to the Camry's 2.2-inch longer wheel base, although overall car length remains the same. Aside from the hybrid model, the Camry's engine choices remain similar to last year. Buyers have a choice of a 2.4-liter 158-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed automatic or manual transmission, and a more-powerful 3.5-liter V-6 now rated at 268 horsepower that's mated to a six-speed automatic. Both engines run on regular unleaded. New technology available in the 2007 Camry include Bluetooth hands-free communication, stability control, voice-activated DVD navigation system and an electronic key that automatically unlocks the car when you approach.
